Clank is an iconic video game robot from the Ratchet and Clank game series on the PlayStation 2. This replica was modelled by me from scratch as an exploration of how far I could push CAD programs such as Inventor or Solidworks in producing creative hinges and movement. It has also been modelled to be accurate to the source material and been 3D Printed at 1:1 scale and assembled.
The fingers make use of nails as pins which have been fixed and hidden. Every joint is posable and can rotate thanks to using a combination of rare earth magnets and washers. Using these low-profile washers allows for inserting magnetic joints into very tight spaces where traditional methods would not be suitable. The project is currently a work in progress and i in the priming and sanding phase.
The ball joints for the arms also utilise a modified spherical door stop which allows for a full and varied range of movement. In addition, I also received kudos from the animator who modelled Clank for the original PS2 games which was extremely humbling.
